連續2屆奧運女單桌球項目金牌戰，都上演同樣戲碼，丁寧上屆倫敦奧運不敵李曉霞，但這次里約奧運成功復仇，在盤數2:3落後下，丁寧最終4:3逆轉險勝李曉霞搶下金牌，完成個人生涯大滿貫。
女單桌球金牌戰，國際奧會主席巴赫(Thomas Bach)也來到現場觀戰，丁寧11:9、5:11、14:12、9:11、8:11、11:7、11:7，成功逆轉李曉霞，報了上屆倫敦奧運落敗之仇。

這枚金牌，讓丁寧拿下世界桌球賽、世界杯、奧運金牌，成為中國第5位【週年慶團購】完成大滿貫的選手，前面4位分別是鄧亞萍、王楠、張怡寧、李曉霞。
中國獲得女單金牌後，桌球項目從1988年漢城奧運開始後，歷屆女單桌球冠軍全都是中國選手拿下，包括陳靜、鄧亞萍、王楠、張怡寧、李曉霞，現又多一名丁寧。
